The Work of Representation: -Representation is the production of meaning of the concepts in our minds though language. It‘s through this link between language and concept that we can refer to real or imaginary objects. -We have Two Systems of Representation: and we say system, because it doesn’t only refer to concepts, but also to the way of organizing them together, like comparing and contrasting. The first system of representation includes mental representations. The second includes language, in its broadest meaning. The relationship between these two systems, between things, concepts, and sign, is called representation. Belonging to the same culture means: shared meanings or conceptual maps AND shared language. -
Theories of Representation: Where does meaning come from? How can we tell the true meaning of a “word” or “image”? 1- The reflective approach/mimetic approach: it states that meaning I inherent in things, and language only reflects it. But in fact, language reflects the mental concept, not the actual object. 2- the second approach is the reflective approach: we impose meaning on language. It is not true because I am not the only source of meaning. Language is not private, but a social practice. 3- the constructive approach: recognizes the social nature of language. Meaning is not inherent in things, we, as a society, construct it.
